• Herman "Shades" Angelo is a second-generation Italian-American. His parents are shopkeepers that emigrated to the States and struggled to stay afloat. They ended up being helped out by the generosity of some of the local gangs.
• Shades grew up idolizing the gangs and auditioned his services with several before being inducted into one of the larger families
• He takes extremely well to the life and rises to the rank of Consigliere.
• Socially, Shades is from humbler roots than many in first class but he sees himself as having risen above them and tends to be be distant with people of more modest means. But he's definitely not above getting his hands dirty.
• The family sent him back to Sicily to do some "negotiation" with some local rivals and is on his way back home
• He claims to be in the mercantile business but there are certain to be whispers among the guests that he's bad news. He does not try very hard to correct people on this account.
• Yes, sunglasses existed in the 1910s/early 20s but they were not at all common or cheap, so his affinity for them and being nicknamed after them isn't at all unusual.
